An overview of UK caravan insurance

In the UK, caravan insurance is readily available and the marketplace is perhaps best described as being ‘dynamic and competitive’.

Cover is typically provided based upon a range of common caravan-type descriptions:

  • touring caravans;
  • static caravans;
  • trailer tents;
  • motorhomes;
  • park homes.

Each of these categories has a policy type associated with it and typically these policies are not interchangeable i.e. you cannot use a static caravan insurance policy to cover a park home.

In the UK caravan insurance, is not mandatory by law the sole exception being motorhomes, which must be covered by a third party liability cover when in use on the road.

Typically, your car insurance may cover your tourer for public liability damage but do check. It will not cover any damage caused to your tourer.

For static homes, in some cases, the owner of a caravan site may have the right to inspect your insurance to satisfy his or herself, that you are suitably covered for third party liability situations. They are not entitled to insist that you have any other form of cover, although it may obviously be prudent to do so.

Site owners should also not insist that you purchase your caravan insurance from them, as a condition of using their site. You may typically find more cost-attractive options available to you, by buying your insurance directly from insurance providers.

Caravan insurance sold in the UK, as per all insurance, will contain terms and conditions that you will need to both understand and comply with.

You may find that some caravan insurance will offer the scope to reduce your premiums by adopting some good behaviours examples might include things such as fitting additional security devices, joining a caravan or owners’ club or storing your caravan off-road and in a secure location, during the winter season.

Some providers of UK caravan insurance may also insist upon the use of certain security devices as a condition of providing cover. That may include things such as wheel clamps, hitchlocks or trackers etc.
