Considerations for Caravan Security

There’s nothing better than having your own caravan, and whether it’s a tourer or a static caravan you’ll be able to get years of enjoyment out of it. However, owning such a vehicle is also a big responsibility as there are a lot of caravan security risks that you need to consider, but if you know what they are and plan accordingly you’ll be far better prepared.
The first thing you need to consider is the theft of the caravan itself. This of course won’t be an issue for static caravans but it can definitely be a threat to touring caravans – it’s estimated that up to 4,000 caravans are stolen every year, and given the expense of many models it’s important to protect your investment.
This means you should invest in as many security devices as you can with things like wheel clamps, hitch locks and even satellite tracking devices being popular choices. Many insurers stipulate that you need a certain number of devices before they’ll consider insuring you, and if you go above and beyond you could even reduce your premiums.
But, this isn’t the only concern. Both static and touring caravans run the risk of being vandalised or having their contents stolen, again making appropriate security devices an essential investment. Locks on the windows and doors are a given but consider things like burglar alarms as well, and you should always store your caravan securely (either at a registered campsite or in a secure storage area) when not in use to reduce the risk of anything happening.
These are just a few caravan security considerations you need to bear in mind, and with the theft of caravans and of their contents on the rise it’s always best to be prepared. But don’t let it put you off – as long as you’ve taken the necessary precautions (and have invested in appropriate insurance) you can get on that holiday in confidence, so take a weight off your mind by understanding the risks and doing something about them.
