The basics of motorhome insurance in Northern Ireland

Motorhome insurance in Northern Ireland needs to provide two basic forms of protection.

The first of those represents cover for its use as a vehicle. The principles of this are typically familiar to all drivers, being the need to protect the vehicle itself plus any damage you may do with it to another person or their property.

The second are those forms of cover that relate specifically to the fact that you’re driving a caravan. For example, that may cover things such as your fittings, fixtures and contents.

Of course, motorhomes may be very substantial recreational vehicles and of potentially very high value. This, plus the historic problems with vehicle insurance in Northern Ireland, may have previously made finding caravan insurance something of a labour.

Today the position is much improved (though far from perfect!) and typically cover is much more readily available.

That’s where the specialist knowledge of an experienced broker may save you significant amounts of time and effort in trying to search to find them yourself.

The motorhome insurance in Northern Ireland offered by some providers may allow you to reduce your premiums if you typically:

  • park your vehicle off-road when not in use;
  • fit additional security devices and trackers;
  • don’t insure younger drivers (some policies may have a minimum age limit of 21 or 25 to drive such vehicles).

Motorhomes may come with a number of external fittings and accessories such as awnings etc. It’s advisable to read the policy carefully as these may be subject to special conditions such as needing to stow the awning when you’re not in or around the caravan.

The good news is that the increasing availability of insurance and specifically motorhome insurance in Northern Ireland, means that prices may also be a little more reasonable than they were in the past.
