What is a Trailer Tent?

Trailer tents are the perfect solution for people that want to enjoy the fun of camping with a few extra creature comforts. They’re much easier to store and tow than a caravan and can be put up with ease, offering the benefits of a caravan and tent combined. But just what is a trailer tent, and what types of models can you choose from?

In a nutshell, a trailer tent is a type of tent that’s stored in, and then folds out from, a trailer. The canvas walls are pegged down to create a large sleeping and living area, and the beds usually fold out from the main trailer body to offer off-the-ground sleeping. Some larger models come with additional awnings and inner tents, and from the outside it’s often difficult to tell the difference between a trailer tent and a regular large-frame tent.

But, there are plenty of other types that you might like to consider, with the above only being the beginning of your trailer tent journey. You can get a flip top trailer tent where the lid of the trailer folds down to form part of the floor, with the canvas being arranged and pegged down to provide the weather-proof covering. These can be erected incredibly quickly and again provide off-the-ground sleeping areas.

Or, for those that like an additional level of comfort there’s the folding camper, where the base unit comes complete with the amenities of a regular caravan (toilet, sink, cooker, beds etc.) with the canvas tent portion simply covering the top. With this type of trailer tent the entire camping unit is supported by the trailer, although many people choose to add additional awnings.

As you can see, there’s more to the trailer tent than meets the eye. Trailer tents can be ideal if you want a bit of added comfort on your camping trip and are perfect if you want to step up from a tent (or even step down from a caravan), and with so many to choose from you’ll soon find one that’s perfect for your needs.
