What is static insurance?

Static insurance relates to a specific type of caravan.
Static caravans
A static caravan is one that’s only really notionally mobile. It may have wheels and perhaps be moved at the end of a season but for the most part it is secured on a single site in one location.
The wheels may typically be jacked up and the caravan anchored on concrete blocks or other semi-permanent standing.
It’s occupied typically for a few weeks or months each year by the owner (or their guests) for holiday and leisure break purposes.
Static insurance (more commonly called static caravan insurance) provides protection for caravans of this type and use.
Note – if you occupy a static caravan for longer periods of time, it may be advisable to consult your insurers as this may require a different form of cover.
Park homes
A park home is typically a custom-built residence on a specifically licensed park.
It’s usually a primary place of residence that’s permanently occupied.
The insurance required here is called park home cover and you typically cannot use static caravan insurance for a park home due to the entirely different risk profiles involved.
Static caravan insurance
The cover typically provided by some insurers offers protection against damage to your caravan due to storms etc, plus the risks arising to your contents and fittings due to burglary and theft etc.
Points worth noting with typical static caravan cover are:
- at the end of the season you may be obliged to drain down all water and heating systems;
- if your park is in a location known as being vulnerable to flooding, you may have trouble finding cover or have to pay a higher premium for it;
- areas outside of the caravan such as those under awnings, may have special conditions attached to them in terms of contents protection – reading those is typically a very good idea;
- some policies may restrict the nature of the contents that will be covered – for example some may not cover cash or very high-value jewellery left in the caravan unattended wile you’re away.
Some owners equip and furnish their static caravans to a very high level of comfort. A disaster to the caravan could be a financial disaster as well.
That’s why it’s important to take static insurance seriously and to find a policy suitable for your individual situation.
