Your static caravan insurance

Static caravan insurance provides insurance protection for both the fabric and contents of a static caravan.

A static caravan is typically defined as being one that is a semi-permanently located on an approved caravan site. It is used for a few weeks per year for the purposes of recreation and holidays, although some insurance may consider this to include renting it to others for their holidays.

If you live in a park home, this will, by contrast, be defined as being your permanent place of residence and is typically located on a local authority approved park home residential site.

You cannot use static caravan insurance for park homes or vice versa.

Static caravan cover may come with some basic conditions as follows:

  • some policies may demand that the caravan is located on a site that does not have a documented history of flooding;
  • when the caravan is closed up for the winter, you may be obliged to drain down all water and heating systems accordingly;
  • you may find some restrictions in terms of high-value items of personal possessions stored as contents (e.g. cash, high-value jewellery or specialist electronic items etc);
  • it is generally not compulsory for you to take the site owners insurance, though you may be charged a fee by them for doing so;
  • as static caravans may be on rural and isolated sites, insurers may offer discounts if you equip your caravan with additional security features such as alarms and security bolts etc.

As with any type of caravan, it might be prudent to make sure that your static caravan insurance also contains third party liability protection just in case you are sued by someone who believes they suffered injury or damage, arising as a result of your caravan’s fixtures and fittings.
